Thurston Equestrian Team is a member of the Oregon High School Equestrian Team program (OHSET) that was formed in 1993. The season begins with practices in November and wraps up with a regional competition in June. Our team is made up of a group of student athletes that compete in various equestrian events. The Equestrian/OHSET program supports, challenges, and offers recognition to the dedicated team members who both physically and mentally pursue the challenge of the sport of equine competition. This program helps students develop lifetime skills, teamwork, and self discipline. All Equestrian/OHSET student athletes are held to a high standard of personal accountability including a GPA standard higher than that of the OSAA.
Thurston Equestrian /OHSET competes in the OHSET South Valley Distinct made up of local High School teams in the Southern Willamette Valley (Churchill, Cottage Grove, Creswell, Elmira, Junction City, Mapleton, Marshfield, North Bend, Pleasant Hill, Roseburg, South Eugene, Springfield, THURSTON and Willamette). The team competes in three local South Valley District meets at The Oregon Horse Center in Eugene. The South Valley District meets are typically in the February, March and April. These district meets give the student athletes the opportunity to qualify for the OHSET state meet held in June at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond. If a student athlete is successful at the state OHSET meet they are then qualified to compete at the Pacific Northwest Invitational Competition (PNWIC). PNWIC is a Regional Championship meet where the best student athletes in Oregon and Washington are brought together for a season finale.
