Hello Colts and Colt Families,
It is pretty amazing to think we are heading into Spring Break 2021 and we haven’t been on campus for over a year. In the last week, things have really opened up on the Covid front for schools and students. I will outline some of them for you in this letter.
Returning for In-Person Instruction
As I am sure everyone has heard by now, we will be offering Hybrid instruction to all students at THS starting April 19th. This model follows the same schedule students are on now, but in-person here at THS. Students will have their classes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at the same times they are currently taking them through our Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) model. The deadline has passed (March 17th) for requesting Springfield’s SPS Online program. We are very excited to have students back on campus for Quarter 4 this spring.
The BIG FOUR
Returning students to classes at THS is very exciting, but we want to emphasize that the safety of students and staff is of the utmost priority. We have adopted The “BIG FOUR” that we will emphasize with students and staff as we return to in-person instruction. The “BIG FOUR” emphasizes the following areas:
- STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK
Students and Staff SHOULD NOT come to school if you answer YES to the following questions:
- Are you experiencing a cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat? (symptomatic)
- Have you had a fever in the last 24 hours?
- Have you had a new loss of taste or smell?
- Have you had vomiting or diarrhea in the last 48 hours?
- Are you currently waiting for results from a Covid-19 test?
- WEAR A MASK
Masks are required at all times while on campus at Thurston High School. The mask needs to fit properly and cover the nose and mouth. Bandanas are not acceptable face coverings. Face shields may be worn in addition to a mask, but not alone.
Students and staff are encouraged to wash their hands frequently and utilize the many hand sanitizer stations located around campus. In addition to the hand sanitizer stations around campus, every classroom will have hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray available to clean surfaces. All desks will be cleaned and sanitized in-between classes.
- SOCIAL DISTANCING
The 6-foot social distancing guideline will be followed at Thurston High School. Staff will be reminding students regularly during passing times to observe this guideline.
Technology (Chromebooks) at School
It is very important that students bring their devices to school every day, fully charged. Teachers will be assigning work through the Google Classrooms, similarly to the way they have been during CDL. Chromebooks or personal devices are a necessity for being successful at THS during Quarter 4. Please set up a routine for your student to have their device charged and ready for school each day.
Progress reports should be in your mailboxes on Monday. When we return to school after break, there will be three weeks left until the end of Quarter 3. Spring Break will be a great time to get late and missing classwork caught up.
Fall sports have been in full-swing for almost a month. Thurston has seen its share of success on the fields, courts and courses. More importantly, students are together and competing. It is rewarding to see the hard work put in by our athletic department and THS support staff that has led to these opportunities for students at Thurston.
In the course of one week we went from no spectators allowed at venues, to parents last week, and this week a limited number of students will have an opportunity to attend the game against the Millers tonight at Silke Field. This is a very exciting change, and we are thrilled to see students in the stands cheering their friends on. If you are not in attendance, you can still stream tonight’s game on the Springfield High School site here:
I always want to mention graduation in this letter to let you know it is constantly on our minds. Our next scheduled graduation meeting with all high schools principals and the District will be after Spring Break. There are a lot of changes happening with the metrics and loosening up of the capacity at venues. We have our fingers crossed that this trend will continue and allow for the best experience possible to celebrate the Class of 2021. Stay tuned for more information.
This year there will be no charge for parking during Quarter 4 at THS. There are three lots that students can utilize with designated entrances to campus. All parking will be “first come, first serve” for students and staff. Information will be shared with students during advisory after the break.
We hope you all have a great Spring Break and have the opportunity to relax and spend some quality family time together. Playing football, soccer, and volleyball during Spring Break is definitely a first for us here at THS, but this has been a year of new things and experiences for us all. Thank you for your patience and grace during this year and we are looking forward to having a smooth transition to in-person learning in April.
